Diaphragm Walls and Slurry Trenching
Diaphragm (slurry) walls are reinforced-concrete walls cast in a bentonite-supported trench, used for basements, metro stations, and cut-off barriers. The construction sequence is: excavate under bentonite slurry โ clean and de-sand the slurry โ lower the reinforcement cage โ place concrete by tremie, which displaces the slurry upward for recovery and reuse. Slurry cut-off walls โ a bentonite-cement or soil-bentonite mix โ are used to contain contaminated groundwater and stop seepage under dams and embankments.
Bored Piles and Drilled Shafts
For large-diameter bored piles (drilled shafts), bentonite slurry keeps the bore open in unstable or water-bearing ground until the rebar cage and tremie concrete are placed. Correct slurry properties are essential: too thin and the hole is not supported; too thick or too laden with drilled solids and the concrete cannot fully displace the slurry, risking defects at the pile toe.
