Role of Bentonite Powder in Drilling

Bentonite powder serves multiple functions in drilling mud:

1. Viscosity Control Bentonite creates a thixotropic fluid that flows when pumped but gels when static. This prevents rock cuttings from settling in the borehole.

2. Filter Cake Formation Bentonite particles form a thin, impermeable layer on the borehole wall, preventing fluid loss into surrounding formations.

3. Borehole Stability The filter cake supports the borehole wall, preventing collapse during drilling.

4. Lubrication Reduces friction between drill string and borehole wall.
