Bentonite Powder in Water Treatment and Clarification โ Turbidity Removal, Coagulation, and Dosage Guide
How bentonite powder clarifies water: adsorption, ballasted coagulation, and turbidity capture. Working alongside alum/PAC and polymers, industrial effluent and colour removal, aquaculture pond use, and how to set dosage with the jar test.
Introduction
Clean water depends on removing the fine suspended particles, dissolved organics, and colour that ordinary settling cannot clear. Bentonite powder is a low-cost, natural mineral tool used across municipal treatment, industrial effluent, pond and aquaculture management, and even food-and-beverage clarification. This guide explains the mechanisms by which bentonite clears water, where it fits alongside conventional coagulants, and how to approach dosage.
How Bentonite Clarifies Water
Bentonite works through three complementary mechanisms:
1. Adsorption: Montmorillonite has an enormous internal surface area and a negatively charged surface, allowing it to adsorb dissolved organics, dyes, heavy-metal ions, and some cationic contaminants. 2. Coagulation aid / weighting: When added alongside a primary coagulant, bentonite provides dense nucleation sites so that fine, slow-settling flocs grow heavier and settle faster ("ballasted" clarification). 3. Sweep and capture: As bentonite particles settle, they physically entrain fine turbidity that would otherwise stay suspended.
Because Radhe Enterprise bentonite powder is finely milled with high swelling capacity, it disperses quickly and presents maximum surface area for adsorption.
Turbidity Removal
Turbidity โ the cloudiness caused by silt, clay, and organic fines โ is the most common water-quality problem bentonite addresses. In low-turbidity raw water, conventional coagulants form light, "pin" flocs that settle poorly. A small bentonite dose adds mass and structure, producing dense flocs that drop out cleanly and reduce the load on downstream filters. This is especially valuable for surface water that swings between clear and muddy with the seasons.
Working With Conventional Coagulants
Bentonite is rarely the only chemistry in a modern clarifier; it is a partner to primary coagulants such as alum (aluminium sulphate) or PAC (poly-aluminium chloride) and, often, a polymer flocculant. A typical sequence is:
