How Bentonite Clarifies Water

Bentonite works through three complementary mechanisms:

1. Adsorption: Montmorillonite has an enormous internal surface area and a negatively charged surface, allowing it to adsorb dissolved organics, dyes, heavy-metal ions, and some cationic contaminants. 2. Coagulation aid / weighting: When added alongside a primary coagulant, bentonite provides dense nucleation sites so that fine, slow-settling flocs grow heavier and settle faster ("ballasted" clarification). 3. Sweep and capture: As bentonite particles settle, they physically entrain fine turbidity that would otherwise stay suspended.

Turbidity Removal
