Cat Litter Manufacturing Process in India — From Bentonite Mining to Finished Product

Introduction

India has emerged as a major manufacturing hub for bentonite cat litter, with Gujarat leading production due to its abundant high-quality sodium bentonite deposits. Understanding how cat litter is manufactured — from raw clay mining to the finished bag on a retail shelf — provides valuable insight for private-label buyers, distributors, and retailers who want to evaluate supplier quality. This guide walks through the complete manufacturing process step by step.

Step 1: Raw Material Selection and Mining

The foundation of quality cat litter is quality bentonite. Not all bentonite deposits are suitable for cat litter production. The ideal bentonite for cat litter has:

• High sodium content (natural sodium bentonite, not calcium bentonite that requires chemical activation)
• Montmorillonite content of 75% or higher
• Consistent mineralogy across the deposit
• Low levels of impurities (silica sand, limestone, gypsum)

In Gujarat, bentonite is mined using open-cast methods. The overburden (soil and rock above the clay layer) is removed to expose the bentonite seam. The clay is then extracted using excavators, segregated by quality grade at the pithead, and transported to the processing plant.

Step 2: Drying

Raw bentonite as mined contains 20–35% moisture. This must be reduced to below 12% before further processing can occur. Drying is typically done in:

• Rotary Drum Dryers: The most common method. Bentonite is fed into a rotating drum heated by natural gas or coal. The tumbling action ensures uniform drying.
• Fluidized Bed Dryers: Used for finer materials, these provide more efficient heat transfer and gentler drying.
• Sun Drying: Some smaller operations use open-air sun drying, though this provides less moisture consistency and is weather-dependent.

The target output moisture for cat litter production is 8–12%. Over-drying (below 6%) can make the clay too brittle, while under-drying (above 12%) reduces clumping performance and can lead to mold growth during storage.
