Introduction

Dolomite is a workhorse raw material in fertilizer manufacturing: a single natural mineral that supplies calcium and magnesium, adjusts product chemistry, and serves as a granulation filler. This guide is written for fertilizer producers and formulators — it explains dolomite's roles in NPK, blended, and organic fertilizers, the specifications to demand, and how to source it in bulk.

The Roles Dolomite Plays in Fertilizer Production

1. Calcium and Magnesium Nutrient Source Dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂) delivers roughly 28–32% CaO and 18–22% MgO, making it the natural choice for adding magnesium and calcium to fertilizer grades. Magnesium-fortified NPKs and Ca/Mg-enriched blends use dolomite to declare a guaranteed Mg (and Ca) content — a real selling point in regions where soils and crops are magnesium-deficient.

2. Filler / Bulking Agent Every fertilizer grade must hit a target nutrient analysis, and filler makes up the balance. Dolomite is a value-adding filler: unlike inert bulking materials, it contributes calcium and magnesium and helps buffer acidity, so the "filler" fraction still does agronomic work.

3. Acidity Buffering / Conditioning Some fertilizer intermediates (for example single super phosphate) carry free acidity. As a carbonate, dolomite can help neutralise free acid and condition the product, improving storage behaviour and reducing corrosiveness.

4. Granulation Feedstock In granulated NPK production, dolomite powder is a common component of the granulation recipe, contributing to the solid matrix while supplying Ca/Mg.
