Dolomite Granules for Soil Conditioning โ How They Work, Benefits, and When to Apply
How dolomite granules condition soil: correcting acidity, unlocking phosphorus and other nutrients, and supplying calcium and magnesium. Benefits growers can expect, why the granular form helps, when and how to apply (test first, timing, method, rate), and what dolomite does not do.
Introduction
Dolomite is one of the most widely used mineral soil amendments in the world, and for good reason: a single natural product corrects soil acidity while supplying two essential nutrients, calcium and magnesium. Dolomite ball granules deliver this in a dust-free, easy-to-spread form. This guide explains how dolomite conditions soil, the benefits growers can expect, and when to apply it. (For certified-organic use and detailed rate tables by soil type and crop, see our companion guide on dolomite granules for organic farming.)
What Dolomite Is
Dolomite is a natural calcium-magnesium carbonate, CaMg(COโ)โ. Radhe Enterprise dolomite ball granules specify:
- Calcium oxide (CaO): 28โ32%
- Magnesium oxide (MgO): 18โ22%
- Purity > 95%, particle size 1โ5 mm, moisture < 2%
- Alkaline pH, white to off-white colour.
Unlike ordinary agricultural lime, which supplies mainly calcium, dolomite supplies calcium and magnesium โ a key advantage on the many soils that are short of magnesium.
How Dolomite Conditions Soil
Dolomite improves soil in three connected ways:
1. Corrects Acidity (Raises pH) As dolomite reacts in moist soil, the carbonate neutralises hydrogen ions, gradually raising pH. Most crops grow best around pH 6.0โ7.0; below that, nutrients become less available and toxic aluminium and manganese become more soluble. Dolomite pushes acidic soil back into the productive range.
2. Unlocks Nutrient Availability Correcting acidity does more than change a number. In acidic soil, phosphorus gets "locked up" in insoluble forms and nutrients like potassium and molybdenum are less available. Raising pH into the optimal band frees these nutrients, improving the return on every other fertilizer you apply.
