Step-by-step guide on how roasted clay is made. Learn the traditional process of clay extraction, cleaning, shaping, controlled roasting, and packaging.
How Roasted Clay is Made – Traditional Process
The production of roasted clay follows a time-tested traditional process that has been refined over generations. Here is the complete step-by-step breakdown:
Step-by-Step Manufacturing Process
Step 1: Natural Clay Extraction
High-quality clay is carefully extracted from specific natural deposits. The source location determines the mineral content and final taste of the product.
Step 2: Cleaning Impurities
The raw clay is thoroughly cleaned to remove stones, debris, roots, and other impurities. This is a critical step for ensuring product safety and quality.
Step 3: Shaping into Chunks
The cleaned clay is shaped into uniform chunks or pieces. Different shapes and sizes are created based on the product type (butter grey, nakumatt, etc.).
Step 4: Controlled Roasting
The shaped clay is roasted at controlled temperatures. This is the most important step:
- Low heat: Creates half-roasted (soft, chewy) varieties
- High heat: Creates full-roasted (hard, crunchy) varieties
- Temperature and duration determine the final texture and flavor
Step 5: Cooling and Packaging
After roasting, the clay is cooled naturally and then packaged for distribution.
What Roasting Improves
- Taste: Enhances the natural earthy flavor
- Texture: Creates the desired crunch or chewiness
- Shelf life: Removes moisture, preventing spoilage
- Safety: Heat helps eliminate some bacteria
