How Absorbent Clay Works

Absorbent clays, primarily calcined bentonite and attapulgite, work through a combination of physical and chemical mechanisms:

1. Capillary Action: The porous structure of calcined clay draws liquid into the granule through capillary forces, similar to a sponge drawing water upward. 2. Surface Adsorption: Liquid molecules adhere to the extensive internal surface area of the porous clay particles. 3. Interlayer Absorption: In bentonite-based absorbents, some liquid is absorbed between the clay's structural layers.

The calcination process — heating clay to temperatures of 500–900°C — drives off bound water and creates the porous structure essential for rapid, high-capacity absorption. A well-calcined bentonite absorbent can absorb 3–5 times its own weight in petroleum products, solvents, and aqueous liquids.

Types of Industrial Absorbent Clays

Calcined Bentonite

Calcined bentonite is the most widely used industrial absorbent clay. It is non-toxic, non-flammable, chemically inert, and effective across a wide range of liquids. Bentonite absorbent granules typically have an absorption capacity of 4–5 times their own weight for oils and hydrocarbons.

Attapulgite (Fuller's Earth)

Attapulgite has a unique needle-like particle structure that provides excellent absorption for both oil and water-based liquids. It is often preferred for floor absorbent applications because of its high-speed absorption and tracking resistance.
