Introduction
Sulphur bentonite fertilizer is one of the most efficient ways to correct sulphur deficiency in soils, and its whole performance rests on a single functional ingredient: bentonite. In a product that is roughly 90% elemental sulphur, the ~10% bentonite is what turns an otherwise slow, inert sulphur pastille into a fast-acting, plant-available fertilizer. This guide, written for sulphur-fertilizer manufacturers, explains how bentonite works in the product, why grade selection matters, and what to specify.
Why Elemental Sulphur Needs Bentonite
Elemental sulphur is the most concentrated sulphur fertilizer available (far richer in S than gypsum or single super phosphate), and it is ideal for correcting sulphur deficiency, especially on neutral-to-alkaline soils. But elemental sulphur has a catch: plants cannot take up sulphur in its elemental form. It must first be oxidised to sulphate by soil bacteria (*Thiobacillus / Acidithiobacillus*), and that oxidation only happens on the surface of sulphur particles.
A solid sulphur pastille has very little surface area for its mass, so on its own it oxidises far too slowly to feed a crop in season. The solution is to make the pastille break apart into fine particles once it is in moist soil โ dramatically increasing surface area. That is exactly what bentonite does.
How Bentonite Disintegrates the Pastille
The mechanism is elegant:
1. The sulphur bentonite granule is manufactured with bentonite dispersed through the molten sulphur. 2. In the field, the granule absorbs soil moisture, which is drawn to the hydrophilic bentonite. 3. The bentonite swells โ as sodium bentonite does so powerfully โ and the swelling pressure cracks and fragments the pastille into a mass of fine sulphur particles. 4. The now-enormous sulphur surface area is rapidly colonised and oxidised to plant-available sulphate by soil bacteria.
Without adequate bentonite swelling, the pastille stays largely intact, oxidises slowly, and the fertilizer underperforms. The bentonite is, quite literally, the disintegration engine of the product.
