The Four Roles Bentonite Plays in Fertilizer Production

1. Granule Binder In pan and drum granulation of NPK and blended fertilizers, bentonite is the binder that holds the granule together. Hydrated montmorillonite gives the wet mass plasticity so granules form and grow uniformly, then — after drying — bridges the nutrient particles into a hard, abrasion-resistant granule that survives bagging, transport, and spreading without crumbling to dust. 2. Carrier and Slow-Release Matrix Bentonite is an excellent carrier for micronutrients (zinc, iron, boron), pesticides, and other actives, distributing them evenly through the product and moderating their release to reduce leaching losses. For a harder, moisture-resistant, controlled-release carrier, many producers specify double roasted bentonite granules.

3. Disintegrating Agent in Sulphur Bentonite Fertilizer This is one of bentonite's most valuable — and least understood — roles.
