Why Fertilizer Needs a Binder

Granular fertilizers must survive bagging, transport, storage, spreading, and handling without breaking down into dust or caking into lumps. A good binder gives the granule:

• Green and cured strength so it holds shape during production and handling.
• Abrasion resistance so it does not degrade to dust in transit.
• Anti-caking behaviour so bags stay free-flowing in humid storage.

Bentonite delivers all three because hydrated montmorillonite is naturally cohesive and, once dried, locks the granule together.

How Bentonite Binds Fertilizer Granules

In granulation, powdered or blended nutrients are agglomerated with moisture in a pan or drum granulator. Bentonite is added as a binding agent: it absorbs and distributes moisture, gives the wet mass plasticity so granules form and grow evenly, and — after drying — bridges the nutrient particles into a hard, durable granule.
