Half Roasted Nakumatt is our most specialised Kenya export product โ combining the crush-resistant kiln profile of Nakumatt with the shorter, more economical roast cycle of half roast. For Kenyan buyers who need granules that survive the Mombasa-to-Nairobi-to-upcountry truck journey without turning to dust, but cannot justify the full Nakumatt price premium, this product is the answer.
The Kenyan supply chain is tough on granules. A container arriving at Mombasa may see its contents trucked 500 km to Nairobi, repacked into smaller bags, then trucked another 300 km to Kisumu or 200 km to Nyeri. At every transfer point, bags are handled โ and every handling event generates dust if granules are weak. Half Roasted Nakumatt's harder granule surface, produced by the reducing-atmosphere kiln profile, reduces dust generation at each handling point compared to standard half roast. For a Kenyan distributor, fewer dust complaints from retailers means fewer returns, better shelf image, and stronger repeat business.

The Kenyan Transport Durability Test
We learned about Kenya's transport challenges the hard way โ early in our export programme, a container of standard half roast arrived in Nairobi with approximately 15% of the granules having degraded to fines during the Mombasa-Nairobi truck journey. The buyer was not happy. We analysed the problem, identified that the combination of Kenyan road conditions (particularly the Mombasa-Nairobi highway before recent upgrades) and multiple handling transfers was crushing softer granules, and developed Half Roasted Nakumatt specifically to solve this problem.
Half Roasted Nakumatt uses the same reducing-atmosphere kiln profile as full Nakumatt โ the key difference is shorter dwell time (40โ50 minutes versus 75โ90 minutes). The reducing atmosphere promotes a harder granule surface without the extended (and expensive) kiln time of full Nakumatt. The result is approximately 70โ80% of full Nakumatt's crush resistance at roughly 60% of the price premium. For the Kenyan supply chain, this level of durability has proven sufficient โ post-switch, granule degradation at destination dropped from 15% to below 5%.

Is Half Roasted Nakumatt worth the premium over standard half roast for Kenya?
If your supply chain involves truck transport beyond Nairobi (e.g., to Kisumu, Eldoret, Nyeri, or Mombasa), the answer is likely yes. The additional crush resistance reduces dust-related quality complaints by an estimated 50โ70% compared to standard half roast, based on feedback from Kenyan buyers who switched. If your customers are all within Nairobi and material is handled only once or twice, standard half roast may be adequate.
Can you ship a trial quantity of Half Roasted Nakumatt?
Yes. We recommend a shared container with standard half roast โ for example, 10 MT of each โ so you can compare the two products side by side in your specific supply chain and customer base. This is the most cost-effective way to determine whether the Nakumatt durability premium is justified for your operation.
